13 blasts tear through northeast India, killing 61
Assam Bomb Blasts - Desitunez.comGAUHATI, India – A series of coordinated blasts tore through northeast India on Thursday, killing at least 61 people and sending police scrambling to find any unexploded bombs in a province troubled by years of separatist violence and ethnic tensions.

At least 300 people were injured in the 13 blasts, most caused by bombs and at least one from a hand grenade, said said Subhash Das, a senior official in Assam state's Home Ministry. Das said at least 31 people lost their lives in five explosions in the state capital, Gauhati.

The largest bomb exploded near the secretariat — the office of the Assam state's top government official — leaving bodies and mangled cars and motorcycles strewn across the road. Bystanders dragged the wounded and dead to cars that took them to hospitals. Police officers covered the burned remains of the dead with white sheets, leaving them in the street.

Tata gifts Cornell University $ 50 million
Ratan Tata - Desitunez.com
Noted industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata has gifted $ 50 million to his alma mater, Cornell University in New York, to help recruit top Indian students to support joint research projects with Indian universities in agriculture and nutrition.

Tata graduated from Cornell in 1959.

The gift from the Tata Trusts -- a group of philanthropic organisations run by Tata, chairman of the business conglomerate Tata Sons Ltd -- will allow Cornell to establish and expand partnerships with Indian scientists that build on its strength in applied agriculture research.

The endowment will also be used to set up a scholarship fund to bring more Indian students, who may be discouraged by Cornell's price tag, to the university. The gift could eventually help support as many as 25 Indian undergraduate and graduate students at a time.

Big B hospitalized on his birthday
Amitabh Hospitalised - Desitunez.com
Millions of fans of superstar Amitabh Bachchan are highly upset right now, as the Superstar of the Millennium has taken ill and has been admitted at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The irony of the situation is that today also happens to be his Birthday.

Amitabh, the 66-year old star, complained of abdominal pain today morning and thus, was immediately rushed to the said hospital, whereby the scans of his stomach and chest were taken.

Needles to say that, no moment his fans and well wishers got the news about him falling ill, the news spread like wild fire, which resulted in the huge gathering outside 'Jalsa'. Readers may recollect that in November 2005, Big B got operated upon as he had developed some intestinal problems.

Not just his fans worldwide, but also each and every member of Desitunez.com are praying with all their heart for the speedy recovery of this living legend.

 Mahendra Kapoor passes away
Mahendra Kapoor - Desitunez.com
The legendary singer Mahendra Kapoor, who set not just India, but the whole globe sing with him 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugale Ugaley Here Moti', the song that was only next to our National anthem, bid adieu to this mortal world on Saturday due to a cardiac arrest at 1930 hrs IST while he was still asleep.

Churning hits and superhits seemed to have become a habit for this velvet voiced man. Songs like 'Tum Agar Saat Dene Ka Wada Karo', 'Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale', 'Bharat Ka Rahnewala Hoon', 'Chalo Ek Baar', 'Neele Gagan Ke Tale' etc... stand testimonial to this. Ironical as it may sound, but the Maharashtra government had just recently announced the Lata Mangeshkar award for his lifetime contribution in the field of playback music.

Mahendra Kapoor was 74 and is survived by wife, three daughters and a son. His funeral took place on Sunday. Everyone here at Desitunez prays for his soul to rest in eternal peace! Needless to say, we will miss you, Mahendrajee...

Bollywood a big hit with iTunes
Ituns Bollywood - Desitunez.com
Bollywood music is getting increasingly popular on global legal music sites. Even though Apple Inc's iTunes is not available in India, the world's largest legal music download site has 17 Bollywood tracks among the top 100 (world music category) most downloaded tunes. iTune downloads are available in 23 countries.

The theme song of Rock On, the recently released film co-produced by Farhan Akhtar (of Dil Chahta Hai fame) and Reliance  Entertainment, ranks 13th in the charts. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na with its popular songs Kabhi kabhi Aditi has grabbed the 9th position. And Singh Is Kinng and Baachna Ae Haseeno is 11th and 17th in the pecking order. Just two years ago, there were only a few Bollywood tracks among the top 50.

According to industry estimates, there are at least 12,000 Bollywood albums currently available on iTunes, which means over 80,000 tracks for download. Two years back, there were just about 20 per cent of 12,000 albums or 2,400 albums that featured on iTunes.

 Mumbai rocked by attacks
mumbaiattack.jpg
Teams of gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant, hospitals and a crowded train station in coordinated attacks across India's financial capital Wednesday night, killing at least 82 people and taking Westerners hostage, police said. A group of suspected Muslim militants claimed responsibility.

Parts of the city remained under siege as dawn approached Thursday, with police and gunmen exchanging occasional gunfire at two hotels and an unknown number of people still held hostage, said A.N. Roy, a top police official. Soldiers also took up positions across the city.

A raging fire and explosions struck the landmark Taj Mahal hotel shortly after midnight. Screams could be heard and black smoke billowed from the century-old edifice on Mumbai's waterfront. Firefighters sprayed water at the blaze and plucked people from windows and balconies with extension ladders.

The attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans, witnesses said. Officials said at least 200 people were wounded.

Amitabh Bachchan discharged from the hospital
Amitabh - Desitunez.com 2008
After quite a traumatic last week, the Bachchan parivaar finally had some respite as Amitabh Bachchan was discharged from Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital yesterday (Fri- Oct 17th) morning. The veteran actor was accompanied by his wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya.

What was quite amusing was the fact that a few hours after reaching home, Big B even posted an entry on his by now famous blog where he thanked his fans and well-wishers for their love and support. He also said that he is going to be resting and recuperating for a while now.

The Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya Rai must be doubly happy, as even her father Krishnaraj Rai who was admitted at Hinduja hospital was discharged yesterday.

We at Desitunez.com wish Amitabh Bachchan a speedy recovery as everyone is waiting to see him back in action. Get well soon!!!
